Adsorption: The attraction and entrapment of one substance ONTO the surface of another substance
Aerobic: Pertaining to or caused by presence of oxygen.
Anaerobic: Pertaining to or caused by the absence of oxygen.
Aquifer: An underground layer of permeable rock or unconsolidated material(sand, gravel, etc) which is saturated with water.
Backwash: The flushing of water backwards through a filter to remove any trapped particles. Done to renew a filter.
Breakthrough: When water pressure forces itself through a filter and creating a hole in the filter media, thereby bypassing any and all filtration.

Disinfection: The removal or inactivation of pathogenic organisms.
DBPs: Acronym for Disinfection Byproducts. Carcinogenic compounds formed during disinfection.
Exfiltration: When water of an inferior quality leaks from a pipe, container, sewer into the surrounding soil and groundwater. This is usually caused from cracks and loose joints and over or high pressurizing of the water system.
Groundwater: Water stored under the Earth’s surface including water under the ocean bottom.
Heavy: An element with a boiling point lower than water.
Infiltration: When water on an inferior quality enters the pipe, casing, watermain, container containing drinking water quality. This is usually caused from cracks and loose joints and under or low pressurizing of the water system.
Pathogen: Microscopic organisms which cause disease in humans. Can be bacteria, viruses, protoza or any other type of microscopic organism.
